Lena Marino “Lena Jane” Syma, 79, passed away Monday, January 1, 2018 in Houston. Lena was a proud Houstonian and Texan, but very proud of her Italian heritage. She was a cheerleader at St. Theresa Catholic Church, then graduated from Incarnate Word Academy. In addition, Lena attended the University of Houston.
Lena won many singing contests growing up, including the amateur talent contest in high school when she won over Kenny Rogers. She loved to tell her grandkids this story. Not only did she have a beautiful singing voice, but she had a quick wit and could tell jokes better than most anyone. Her one-liners are still used at the Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo where she was a lifetime member.
Lena spent many years in the banking industry finally retiring with Tucker, Taunton, Snyder and Slade, Attorneys at Law.
She had a great personality, never met a stranger and always had a smile. Her greatest love in life were her grandsons, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Lena is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and husband. Left to cherish her memory are her loving daughter, Marianna Johnson and husband Andrew and her two grandsons, Andrew Johnson and wife Tiffany and Robert Johnson.
Services include a visitation on Thursday, January 4, 2018 from 5 pm until 8 pm (Rosary at 7 pm) at the Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel, and the funeral service will be Friday, January 5, 2018 at 1:30 pm-also at Woodlawn. Interment will follow at the Woodlawn Garden of Memories Cemetery.
