Obituary for Mark Seegers

Mark Seegers
After a courageous battle against cancer, Mark Huckins Seegers drafted his final fantasy baseball team before leaving the field for the last time on April 6, 2018, two days after his 60th birthday.
Mark was born in Houston on April 4, 1958. He graduated from Strake Jesuit Preparatory in 1976, and attended the University of Houston. Blessed with “the voice,” Mark devoted much of his life to radio news and sports broadcasting at various Houston-area stations. He served as public address announcer for UH football and basketball for 18 years, and for the Houston Rockets for 14 years. He continued as the “go to” announcer for special sports events in town, including NCAA Final 4 tournaments. He worked the Astrodome scoreboard for many years. While at UH, Mark started the popular Guy V. Lewis Show, and was the play-by-play announcer for UH baseball on KUHF.
After radio, Mark moved on to a career in media relations at Baylor College of Medicine for 9 years, and Harris County Precinct 2 Sylvia Garcia for 8 years. He was the communications director for Harris County Precinct 4 R. Jack Cagle from 2011 to present. Mark advised and counseled Commissioner Cagle through many critical public-relation scenarios on how to communicate effectively with print and on-air media. He led a team of 7 staff members that initiated several projects to improve communications with Pct. 4 constituents and employees.
Mark created Pct. 4’s Events Division, including Sunday Afternoon in the Park, Summer Movie Nights, Shakespeare Festival, and Holiday Wonderland. The Shakespeare Festival was one of his greatest successes. Now in its 5th year, produced by the Shakespeare in the Shade nonprofit he created, this year’s production of Romeo & Juliet will be held April 21-22 in Burroughs Park in Tomball.
All along, his passion remained baseball. He knew the history, players, and stats. He enjoyed taking in games at stadiums across the country, and competing for bragging rights with his fantasy baseball league buddies, including best friend, Tom Kleinworth. Although weak from chemo, he attended one of the Houston Astros’ World Series games, grateful to see that FINALLY they just might win it all!
He was so very proud of his sons and enjoyed attending their concerts and musical productions. He loved all animals, and had some special dog companions throughout his life, including Freddy. He was beyond joy when his granddaughter was born last year. “I like this grandpa thing,” he said many times.
Mark is survived by his sons, Alec, Houston; Will, his wife, Jenny, and granddaughter, Jane, Los Angeles; sister, Sally Seegers, and husband, Ron Gotlieb, of Dallas; brother, Greg Seegers, and husband, Luis Lopez, Querétaro, Mexico; brother, Jeff Seegers, San Francisco; niece, Shana Beasley, husband, Beau, and great nieces, Charlotte and Carly, Coppell, TX; aunt and uncle, Ned and Liz Mahfouz, Dallas; cousin, Chris Mahfouz, wife, Allie, Houston; former wife, Theresa Parker, Houston; several Huckins cousins, and many friends. He is predeceased by parents Lamar and Mary Frances (Huckins) Seegers, and brother David Seegers.
A memorial service will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 1101 Antoine Dr, Houston, TX 77055, Wed., April 11. Visitation from 10 am-12 pm, with requiem/eulogy to begin about 11:30 am, followed by graveside committal. Honorary pallbearers are Commissioner Cagle, Tom Kleinworth, Doug Miller, Bob Neyland, Tripp Walter, and Jeff Cardenas. Donations can be made in Mark’s honor to the Jack Valenti School of Communications at UH; SPCA of Houston, or the Astros Foundation.
